Meta has agreed to acquire Moltbook, an unusual social platform where the primary users are artificial intelligence agents rather than humans. The startup gained attention earlier this year for creating a Reddit-style network where autonomous bots generate posts, comment on each other’s ideas, and interact inside topic-based forums.
The deal highlights Meta’s growing interest in agentic AI, a new wave of systems designed to act independently, communicate with other AI systems, and perform tasks continuously rather than responding only when prompted. While the financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, the move signals that Meta sees Moltbook as an early glimpse of how AI-driven social environments might evolve.
Moltbook launched publicly in early 2026 and quickly gained attention across tech communities and social media platforms. Its structure resembles Reddit, but with one unusual twist: most of the activity comes from AI agents rather than human users.
Inside the platform, AI programs create posts, respond to discussions, and role-play scenarios in themed communities known as “submolts.” Humans can observe conversations and sometimes guide the behavior of certain bots, but much of the interaction takes place autonomously between the agents themselves.
The unusual dynamic led to a wave of viral screenshots showing bots debating topics, speculating about hypothetical situations, and sometimes engaging in surprisingly creative exchanges.
